Extract Bills of Materials from PDF and Scanned Documents
A bill of materials is only useful once it is in a system you can filter, sum, and compare, not locked inside a PDF or a scanned parts list. Datafromfile reads a BOM document, recognizes its part-number/quantity/description columns using its real column headers, and turns it into a structured table you can review, correct, and export.
Supported document types
- Single-level and flat multi-column BOM tables
- BOM exports saved or printed to PDF
- Photographed or scanned paper parts lists
- Assembly parts lists embedded in a drawing sheet
Fields extracted
- Part Number
- Part Name / Description
- Quantity
- Material
- Revision
- Supplier (when present)
- Unit of Measure
Use cases
- Digitizing a supplier-issued BOM for procurement review
- Comparing a received BOM against an internal parts list (see Detect Duplicate Parts below)
- Feeding a structured BOM into a spreadsheet-based costing model
Frequently asked questions
- Can it extract a BOM from a photo, not just a clean PDF? Yes, a clear photo of a printed BOM works the same way as a native PDF export, though a native PDF or a well-lit scan gives the most reliable column recognition.
- Can I find duplicate part numbers across several BOM files? Yes, once extracted, Datafromfile's duplicate-detection tool can compare part numbers across multiple uploaded BOMs in one batch.
