- Comparing Datafromfile vs Tabula? Here's the honest breakdown.
- Tabula is a real, well-respected tool. If you haven't used it: it's free, open source, and built specifically to pull tables out of PDF files, originally made by journalists for journalists. Newsrooms including ProPublica, the New York Times, and the Times of London have used it for real investigative work. This is an honest comparison, not a takedown.
- What Tabula actually does
- Tabula parses a PDF's own text layer using Java's PDFBox, works out where table lines and text blocks sit, and reconstructs the grid. You export the result as CSV or Excel. It runs as a local desktop app (or from the command line via tabula-py), and nothing you feed it ever leaves your machine.
- Where Tabula stops
- Tabula's own documentation is direct about this: it "only works on text-based PDFs, not scanned documents." If a PDF is a photo or a scan with no underlying selectable text layer, Tabula has nothing to parse, there's no text layer for it to find lines in.
