Convert Bank Statement PDFs to a FreeAgent CSV

Turn a PDF or scanned bank statement into the CSV layout FreeAgent’s bank statement upload asks for: no header row, then a dd/mm/yyyy date, the amount (money out negative) and the description on each line, with commas and quote marks taken out of descriptions. The balance check confirms the statement ties before you download.

Features

  • FreeAgent’s layout: date, amount, description on each line, with no header row
  • Dates written as dd/mm/yyyy
  • Commas and quote marks removed from descriptions, one line per transaction
  • Money out is written as a negative amount and money in as a positive one
  • Checks opening balance + transactions = closing balance, and flags the row where a running balance stops adding up
  • Rows whose date or amount cannot be read are named and left out, never exported with a guessed value

How it works

  • Upload the statement: A PDF bank statement, native or scanned.
  • Check the balances: Every transaction is extracted, then the opening balance, money in, money out and closing balance are checked against each other.
  • Download the FreeAgent CSV: Choose “FreeAgent bank statement upload” in the export options, then upload the file to the bank account in FreeAgent.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why does the file have no header row? FreeAgent’s guide to formatting a bank statement CSV asks for no header row: each line is a date, an amount and a description, in that order.
  • What happens if the statement does not balance? The balance check shows which row breaks the running balance, so you can correct that cell in the editor before exporting. You see the result before you download, and the export is not blocked.
  • Can I still get an Excel file? Yes. The same extraction exports to XLSX, CSV and JSON too, and the Excel file includes a Verification sheet with the balance check.
  • Is it free to try? Yes, every plan includes free monthly extraction credits, no credit card required to try it.
